Improvisation on
Christian Music by
Fran Toney Young

Comments from Former Students or Their Parents

“Fran Young influenced the lives of my two oldest daughters, Bekah and Rachel, by instilling in them a love of music that impacted our entire family. Our girls took piano lessons for 12 and 13 years, respectively, and filled our home with worship and praise music that blessed and enlight ened all of us. Fran was such an encouragement to the girls, and both were asked to play in worship bands at our church because her teaching was so excellent. She truly poured out the blessing of her gift of teaching improvisation to her students and we are the grateful recipients of that blessing!”

“When I was 6 years old, I got it in my head that I wanted to learn to play the piano. But, as my mom pointed out, we didn’t have a piano, nor did we know anyone who gave lessons. So we sat down and prayed that, if this was a desire God had put in my heart, He would provide. Within about a week, we were moving a beast of an old upright into our kitchen, and my mom met Fran at a Bible study and set up my first lesson. The piano and music were such an amazing part of growing up and will always be an important part of my life. And I cannot imagine having a better teacher. Fran was always precise and thorough, while at the same time allowing and encouraging my opinions and creativity. Even when she would threaten me with the “blood pen” for not doing my theory J, I knew she sincerely cared about me, as she does all of her students. I am so excited for and proud of her for making this book a reality, and I’m thrilled that so many others will now be able to benefit from her passion and expertise. I am so thankful to have had her as my teacher, and, if possible, am even more grateful to have her as my friend.”

(Author’s note: Take note of Bekah’s calligraphy of the seven Hebrew words for praise throughout the book! Bekah is now a professional dancer, and has taught Christian dance for several years in Nashville.)

“Fran Young’s method of teaching improv is very complete. It enables you to truly make music instead of just playing notes on a page. Through her teaching method I have a foundation of knowledge and skill that has enabled me to compose music of my own in multiple styles. I can’t stress enough how this improv method has trained me as a composer and as a musician. It is oneof the most valuable teaching methods. I am so glad that it will now reach the public.”

Comments from Current Students

“Fran Young’s method of instruction has been the answer for my daughter. Her love of music was fostered and fed while successfully learning to play beautiful music. But that is not the best part. My daughter has improved in music reading skills and learned theory by application. That is not the best part either. She is inspired to play the piano more, and use the gift of music to glorify the Lord. Now that is the best part!”

“I love Mrs. Young’s improvisation method! It’s helped my understanding of chord structure and piano theory. I have truly been blessed to be taught by someone so gifted!”
